#D7PX ftw! I like it! Let's start the movement!

There are a number of people talking about setting up steady performance testing. It's more a matter of time and resources than difficulty. Should happen soon.

The other thing to note here, aside from that there's still time/opportunity to improve the engine in API-neutral ways, is that the D7 engine has a much better caching framework. Specifically, it is organized in a way that can help with logged-in pages even more effectively than via the standard block cache.

While we do want Drupal to be faster out of the box, I'd be interested to see how an <i>optimized</i> Drupal 7 stacks up against a similar Drupal 6 (e.g. memcached backing fields in d7 vs just for the normal caches in d6). As the system gets more and more powerful, better and better caching strategies become more important. We can and should make the code faster, but the fastest code is the code that doesn't run when its not needed. ;)

Is there a #D7PX tag? :-)

It would be cool if the Drupal testing framework has a performance testing component and can report performance regressions at the patch level. That doesn't sound too hard to do I would suppose. Does this exist?

Christopher, We are still in a development stage of D7. That means there is room for performance improvements. The current phase we are in is, partially, targeted at performance. That's why these test are important.

Very saddening... In Paris, Dries seemed to imply that preliminary tests for d7 when scaling were promising, as well. I've not heard anyone mention in which ways you would have to scale Drupal 7 in order to obtain performance at least on par with Drupal 6 (or better?) Any thoughts on that?
